Spending your family vacation in the local area round your city is a very good idea if you are looking for an inexpensive family vacation. Look for some state parks around your city. There you and your children can indulge in various fun filled activities. You can put up a tent in the park's camping ground, which is much cheaper than a hotel room. Also you can visit a local amusement park which usually is not that expensive. Check out the local historical places that you may not have visited before. It can be a nice way to educate your kids about local history and folklore. Such a family weekend getaway will not cost you much and will let you enjoy your time with your family.
