Although mesothelioma is a highly malignant cancer, it is also extremely rare, striking about 2,300 American men a year. Researchers hope that asbestos regulations implemented in the early 1970s will result in a steady decrease in the number of mesothelioma cases nationally. In the next 50 years, they anticipate the number of cases among men in the United States will decline to about 500.Mesothelioma differential diagnosis proved that microscopic needle-like asbestos fibers that have passed through lung tissue are ultimately responsible for the tumors that grow in the chest lining or abdomen. Doctors aren’t certain how much asbestos it takes to cause the cancer, or whether the chemical or physical properties of the fibers are to blame.
