State requirements for becoming a notary public, vary. Washington, D.C. of course has its own requirements. To become a notary in Washington, D.C., you must either live or work in D.C. and be over the age of 18. You must complete the notary public application with an attached letter explaining your reasons for applying, then go through the required notary training seminar reviewing the basic rules and regulations of being a notary public. After passing training, you are responsible for obtaining a notary seal (you can buy notary supplies at Notary Underwriters, Inc., among other places) and secure a $2,000 bond. You then take your notary public seal to ONCA to take the Oath of Office.
